Madeline Whitesell is a director and designer who works across music, theatre, and visual art. Her work examines love and intimacy within structures of violence. By drawing on both ancient and modern influences, she aims to derail the current conventions of opera and music-theatre. She uses high-contrast, expressionistic staging, taking particular inspiration from mythology, religion, ritual, pop culture, and her experience with chromesthesia.
Madeline has developed work with The Brooklyn Academy of Music, The PROTOTYPE Festival, National Sawdust, Beth Morrison Projects, The HERE Arts Center, The Tank, FringeArts, The Manhattan LGBT+ Center, The Krannert Center for Performing Arts, and the Ann Arbor Film Festival.
She is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Advanced Devising Practice at Arthaus.Berlin International Training and Research Centre.
